Measuring deep support for what matters in the energy transition for the first time.
The launch of a groundbreaking research and data tool has measured Australians’ deep support for the clean energy transition and renewable energy technologies for the first time.
The Clean Energy Solutions Index, launched today by 89 Degrees East, with support from Boundless Earth, measures public sentiment across 11 clean energy technologies critical to Australia’s future, from household to large-scale industrial and infrastructure solutions.
Using four key metrics—personal support, belief in national benefit, perception of local support and willingness to advocate—each solution is given a one-number score out of 100, providing decision-makers with a powerful signal of where mandates can be strengthened and where greater engagement is needed.
Dr Rebecca Huntley, Director of Research at 89 Degrees East, said the Index is designed to move Australia past the polarisation that has long dominated climate and energy policy.
“Australians are overwhelmingly supportive of the shift to clean energy—but until now, leaders have lacked the data to understand the depth of that support,” Dr Huntley said.
“The Clean Energy Solutions Index shows us where support is strongest, where more effort is needed, and how to build confidence in our national capacity to deliver. This is about moving beyond the climate wars and grounding our clean energy future in the shared values of the Australian people.”
The inaugural Clean Energy Solutions Index 2025 reveals that Australians are most confident in the solutions they know best—particularly solar – and where solutions benefit both the economy and the environment.
Key Findings
- The highest Support Score recorded was for Installing Solar Panels at Home (81/100)
- The National Score reflecting deep support across all 11 clean energy solutions is 60/100.
- The highest support scores were reported in Western Australia (64) and Tasmania (63), while the lowest State Scores are in Queensland (57) and NSW (58).
The survey (n=3162) highlights a perception gap: while Australians strongly back the transition, many underestimate how much progress has already been made. Addressing this gap will be critical to maintaining momentum and confidence in meeting national targets.
Dr Huntley said the Index is designed to grow in value over time:
“This is more than just polling about sentiment —it’s a sophisticated tool that decision-makers across government, industry and advocacy can use to accelerate action.”
– Dr Huntley.
“By tracking shifts in attitudes year-on-year, the Index will help us sustain the momentum needed to deliver the transition at the speed and scale the climate crisis demands.”
– Dr Huntley.
The Clean Energy Solutions Index is a national public resource, with detailed data available in the 2025 report — and even further detail soon available through an innovative, interactive dashboard.
